Leach: "He's already got the sweater!"

Now in print: "Snatching victory from defeat: A bit of a movement is afoot to put defeated Congressman Jim Leach in the president's seat at the University of Iowa."

Bryon Houlgrave's story in tomorrow's Muscatine Journal says, "Clark has since gotten a response that brushes Leach off..." (apparently a reference to a couple e-mails I mentioned), but I'm actually getting thumbs-up encouragement from almost everyone who answers me. I won't post any of those comments without permission, but I welcome comments here.

Presidential Search Committee:

I've now read the Position Description and other material at http://www.uiowa.edu/uipresidentialsearch/ (I hadn't before going public), and I commend you for it. Nothing I read there diminishes my conviction about Jim's superb qualifications.

The main objection I've heard has to do with perceptions of a deficit in Jim's "academic experience." My view, admittedly from "outside the bubble," is that such a complaint may accord too much regard for one attribute of the ideal candidate, at the expense of recognizing Jim's extraordinary overall strengths.

I do apologize for any "anti-academic" attitude I may be showing. I intend no disrespect.

But--but!--I must say that anyone who supposes the congressman an intellectual lightweight hasn't been paying attention, and I have no answer for anyone who's stuck on whether he's paid the right professional dues or sat on the right committees for the past 30 years.

My November 8 "Talk of Iowa" call and the related discussion may now be heard at http://128.255.60.46:8080/ramgen/wsuiarc/IT11_08_06.rm . My call comes 12 minutes 40 seconds into the recording.

From now on, the best place to follow my "He's already got the sweater!" campaign is at http://iowaglobal.blogspot.com/ . Thanks for your attention.

Sincerely,

"Dan"

Leach mentioned as possible U.N. ambassador
JANE NORMAN
REGISTER WASHINGTON BUREAU

November 14, 2006

A push is on by some members of Congress to see Rep. Jim Leach, R-Ia., named as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Leach, a 30-year veteran of the House and a foreign affairs expert, was defeated in the Nov. 7 election by Democrat David Loebsack of Mount Vernon.

Leach is the top Republican on the House International Relations Committee and would have been in line for the chairmanship had he stayed in office and Republicans retained control.

He is the chairman of the subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific and has been a leading voice on policy toward North Korea.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., and Rep. James Walsh, R-N.Y., are developing a letter to other members proposing that Leach be named U.N. ambassador.

An aide to Blumenauer said the letter will be sent around this week.

The current ambassador is John Bolton, who has been fiercely opposed by Democrats. Bolton is now serving in a recess appointment, which means his term expires when the new Congress convenes in January.

Although President Bush has resubmitted Bolton’s nomination, it’s not clear there will be enough votes in the Senate to confirm him.

Aides to Leach said that he had no immediate comment on the proposal.

Regents discard finalists for U of I presidency
Regents would not say whether a new search committee will be formed, whether they did not agree with the finalists who were forwarded to them, or whether they have someone else in mind for the presidency.
